Over 100 students and mentors from 11 provincial schools competed in the 11th annual Model Boat Race competition at the Marine Institute on Saturday, November 23.
Students competed using remote-controlled miniature vessels of their own design and construction. They navigated their boats through a slalom course of buoys and raced head-to-head in MI’s flume tank.
In the championship race, Clarenville High defeated Fatima Academy to clinch first place and the title of Fastest Boat.
Awards were presented to the following teams:
Taking marine design components into consideration, each team worked together to build a remote-controlled, operational model ship to competitively race in MI’s flume tank.
While the design and fabrication of the model boats was up to each team, they are required to use the same propulsion control system supplied by MI.
As part of the event, teams are required to produce a poster board display describing boat design and fabrication. Teams also developed a poster and design booklet, including sketches and notes on the concepts that helped in the overall design and manufacture of the boat.
The 11th annual Model Boat Race was organized by the School of Maritime Studies and the Department of Academic and Student Affairs. This year’s competition was supported by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Fleetway, Adaptive Marine Solutions Inc., Fab-Tech Industries and Equinor.
