More than 100 students and mentors across fifteen teams of junior high and high schools from Canada will compete at the 2023 NL Regional Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Competition at the Marine Institute scheduled for May 5-6. Watch the live stream
Teams have designed and built ROVs required to complete a series of tasks while deployed in MI’s flume tank. The specific task that the students need to complete is related to marine renewable energy, coral reefs, blue carbon and oceanographic profiler floats.
This year, the MATE ROV Competition is highlighting the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and inspiring our global community to embrace environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts to create a sustainable future on our ocean planet.
The SCOUT (junior high) class will begin setting up their ROVs and performing safety inspections on the evening of May 4. Their competition begins at 9:30 am on May 5 and runs until 4:30 pm. An awards ceremony will follow.
The RANGER (high school) class will begin setting up and performing safety inspections on the evening of May 5. Their competition will commence at 9:30 am on May 6, running until 4:30 pm. Teams in this division are competing for the opportunity to travel to the International MATE Competition, hosted in Colorado from June 22-24.
Schools competing in the SCOUT division are: Heritage Collegiate, Macdonald Drive Junior High, St. Mark’s School, Random Island Academy and Mobile Central High.
Schools competing in the RANGER division are: Tricentia Academy, O’Donel High School, Mount Pearl Senior High School, Ascension Collegiate, Gonzaga High School, Labrador Straits Academy, Trafalgar Castle School, Mobile Central High, Queen Elizabeth High School and Holy Heart of Mary High School.
