World Maritime Day annually recognizes mariners and their contribution to the global maritime sector in transporting more than 80 per cent of world's goods to markets
This year’s theme is “Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet.”
During the pandemic, mariners and the maritime sector continue to play a vital role in the transportation of goods, including medical supplies, food and fuel.
The Marine Institute’s School of Maritime Studies educates and trains ships’ officers – through its nautical science and marine engineering programs – to work in this important sector. MI also works closely with industry partners who provide students with the valuable experience at sea during their program work terms – enabling them to successfully transition into maritime careers.
Learn more about MI’s student mariners today via our social media channels: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
World Maritime Day was established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations agency responsible for setting global standards for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.
Earlier this month, the IMO called on member states to designate mariners as essential workers, to ease travel restrictions and help reduce delays in crew changes.
