Marine Institute students will highlight the importance of clean, safe water during World Water Day on March 22
Twenty-eight students enrolled in MI’s Marine Environmental Technology diploma and Advanced Diploma in Water Quality are taking part in the event scheduled from Noon to 1:15 p.m. in the main lobby.
The students will be on hand to display posters explaining their water projects and answer questions. Their project topics include wetlands, green burials, plastic pollution and water issues of First Nations’ communities.
Also participating with displays of their own: City of St. John’s, Conservation Corps, Ducks Unlimited, MI Environmental Society, MUN Botanical Gardens, Northeast Avalon ACAP and the Stewardship Association of Municipalities.
“World Water Day is a great opportunity to bring awareness to the serious issues regarding access to clean and safe drinking water,” said Kim Robertson, instructor with MI’s School of Fisheries and chair of the Advanced Diploma in Water Quality
Ms. Robertson also coordinates student activities for World Water Day.
The theme of this year’s World Water Day is “Leaving No One Behind,” which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water for all by 2030.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 2.1 billion people worldwide currently live without safe water at home.
