As the Fisheries and Marine Institute’s (MI) newest students settle into class, the Institute’s Recruitment Office is gearing up to hit the road to meet the next class of prospective students, but not before a quick kick-off session to build excitement amongst faculty and staff
The Recruitment Kick-Off, which has been held for the past four years is a chance for Student Affairs to engage faculty, staff and students in the upcoming recruitment season, hand out their latest materials and chat about the role that everyone at the Institute plays in supporting students.
“MI is more than just a campus, we’re a whole community,” said Dr. Rob Shea, Associate Vice President (Academic and Student Affairs) at the Marine Institute. “The annual Recruitment Kick-Off is a chance for everyone to come together to learn about our recruitment strategy, ask questions and find out how they can help new students find their way to MI and the exciting programs we offer.”
The Kick-Off is also a chance to meet any new members of the recruitment team and learn about their upcoming travels. This year, the team will visit high schools and educational fairs across Atlantic Canada, Ontario and British Columbia.
Sessions across Atlantic Canada take place with support from the Atlantic Association of Registrars & Admissions Officers (AARAO) – an organization of enrolment service professionals committed to connecting Atlantic high school students with post-secondary and led by MI’s Enrolment Management Coordinator and current AARAO President, Jennifer Howell.
“As we make our way to the various provinces, we rely heavily on support and information from MI faculty and staff – those who are experts in their areas,” said Ms. Howell. “The Recruitment Kick-Off offers them an opportunity to learn about what we’re doing, how we’re doing it and how they fit within the process.”
MI provides students with a practical education that prepares them for careers close to home and around the world – at sea and on land.
This year, the message is clear. For students looking to work with underwater vehicles, protect the world’s waterways and coastal zones, navigate a ship, manage food security or develop the systems that make a vessel run, MI is the place to be.
“Recruitment really is a team effort,” said Angie Clarke, Director of Student Affairs at the Marine Institute. “MI opens up a world of opportunity for students and everyone has a role to play in sparking interest in our programs. We’re thankful for the support we receive from across campus and are looking forward to another successful recruitment season.”
