A Racing Success for Model Boat Contest

A total of eleven miniature vessels raced across the Marine Institute’s flume tank this past weekend during the fourth annual Model Boat Race Competition

This year’s event united nine schools from the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas, with a total of eleven teams competing. Teams were judged based on the design and construction of their models and top prize for fastest boat was awarded to Clarenville High School. 

In addition to the top prize, a number of others were also handed out following the day-long competition. Holy Trinity High School took home the prize for Most Innovative Design, while Baltimore School Complex won the Best Poster and Design Booklet award. O’Donel High School earned a prize for Most Aesthetically Pleasing Boat and Best Team Spirit went to Queen Elizabeth Regional High School. New this year was a certificate for most social media posts, which went to Holy Trinity High and Best Ship Handler which was presented by Captain John Ennis to Faith Hollohan of Clarenville High. 

This year’s Model Boat Race was organized and judged by MI’s School of Maritime Studies, School of Ocean Technology and Student Recruitment. Teams worked together to build an operational ship model, apply physics and mathematical principles and competitively race the vessel in the flume tank. In the process, students also learned more about the exciting career opportunities available in marine design and operation.

Congratulations to all participating schools, including Queen Elizabeth Regional High School, Holy Trinity High School, Ascension Collegiate, Baltimore School, Carbonear Collegiate, Crescent Collegiate, Clarenville High School, O’Donel High School and Marystown Central High School.
