Alumni and former instructors from the Electronics/Electrical Engineering Technology Class of ’73 gathered with their spouses at the Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University on Friday, July 26 to celebrate their 40th reunion
Known then as the College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics the class graduated at the institute’s former campus on Parade Street.
“We value our alumni and hosting the 40th reunion for the Class of ’73 was an honour,” said Gerald Anderson, manager, Department of Development and Engagement. “Alumni are a significant part of the Marine Institute’s history. Hearing their memories and showing them how the institute has changed was an excellent experience to share.”
Alumni enjoyed a tour of MI’s Holyrood Marine Base, School of Ocean Technology and experienced the institute’s flume tank, full mission ship’s bridge simulator, tug simulator and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) simulator.
The reunion also included lunch and a presentation on the institute by Glenn Blackwood vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute).
With the Marine Institute’s 50th anniversary just around the corner, this celebration was a welcoming prelude.
“Our fiftieth anniversary celebrations next year will reflect on MI’s journey and the alumni, faculty, staff and partners who have brought us to this point,” said Anderson. “Hosting reunions such as this one are imperative in showing our appreciation to those who have contributed to the success of the Marine Institute over the years. Together we are celebrating some of the institute’s best chapters.”
