At the annual spring scholarship ceremony last week, the Marine Institute handed out over $16,000 in scholarships to a group of 32 impressive students
“This year’s scholarship recipients were a diverse group. They are not only are completing an array of programs here at the MI but they are from all across Canada and even from Russia,” said Glenn Blackwood, vice-president of Memorial University (Marine Institute). ”It just goes to show how well are our efforts are paying off to grow our enrolment and attract the best students for the marine transportation, ocean technology, food and fisheries industries.”
The ceremony took place in Hampton Hall at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Rd. campus in St. John’s and included remarks from Glenn Blackwood, and Captain Sid Hynes, chair of the Marine Institute Industry Advisory Committee. Dr. Peter Fisher, Associate Vice-President (Marine Institute) Academic and Student Affairs, presented the scholarships.
The Sidney A. Hann Memorial Scholarship was also awarded for the first time to Michael Hurley, a student in the Advanced Diploma in Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management program. Hann served as an instructor at the Marine Institute for 29 years. He taught a variety of courses to thousands of students who went on to pursue careers in the seafood processing and aquaculture industries, with many eventually making significant contributions in their fields.
In 1992, Hann was awarded the Marine Institute’s Teaching Excellence Award. Funding for the scholarships and bursaries was provided by an assortment of organizations, companies, individuals and MI industry partners. The funding helps MI reward hard working students and plays a role in the Institute's ability to attract new students from across Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada.
“Each scholarship ceremony provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the success of our students and that is not only an important function but something that we take pride in being able to do,” said Blackwood.
