Nearly 200 first year students are set to converge on the Marine Institute's campus on Tuesday, September 6 in preparation for the first day of classes for the 2011 fall semester
MI's executive director, Glenn Blackwood and Memorial University president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Gary Kachanoski, will welcome students in diploma of technology and technical certificate programs.
"We are excited to welcome our new students to the Marine Institute as they kick off this new phase of their lives," said Mr. Blackwood. "We are thrilled they have chosen the Marine Institute as the place to pursue their dreams. As a world class facility, MI has much to offer in the way of learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. It is my hope that they will take full advantage of these opportunities as they work towards building successful careers."
With new students coming from across the province and country, MI is also set to welcome international students from the Bahamas, Russia, Jamaica and the United States. "Each year our international student intake increases and we are so pleased to welcome them to our institute and our province," said Mr. Blackwood. "Our student body, not to mention our faculty and staff are shining examples of how MI has truly become a national and international institute."
Orientation will kick off with registration in the main lobby at 8:30 am followed by a welcome and general overview at the MI gymnasium at 9:00 am. "Our intent is to give students the essential information they need to be successful here at MI," said Rhonda McMeekin, student liaison officer. "This orientation session allows students to become familiar with their surroundings, interact with new friends, and introduce them to their program of study. From how to obtain a parking permit, to time management skills and everything in between. We basically want to make their transition as smooth as possible."
Orientation will take place until 4:00 pm with the family session beginning at 7:00 pm in Hampton Hall.
