The Department of National Defense (DND) students have organized a campus clean-up day at the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland on Tuesday, May 31. The DND students and detachment have invited students, faculty and staff from MI to join them in the clean-up
Members of the media are invited to attend the event. The activities start at 1 p.m. outside the Institute’s main entrance. All volunteers will be provided bags and gloves.
Clean-up participants are then welcome to attend a barbeque at 3 p.m. in the MI Student Lounge. The Marine Institute’s Sustainability Committee is (MISC) is also supporting the DND students’ efforts and is encouraging faculty and staff to take part.
“We will break into groups and cover the entire Marine Institute campus, as well as surrounding neighborhoods,” said Lt. Cmdr. Stewart Hughes, coordinator of Operation Clean Sweep. “We appreciate the support granted by the Marine Institute and we look forward to working together with MI students, faculty and staff. We want to do our part to help keep the Marine Institute campus and this section of St. John’s clean and beautiful.”
The DND students annual spring clean-up was held for the first time at MI in May of 2010. Lt. Cmdr. Hughes explains it is customary on Canadian Forces Bases across Canada for the personnel who live and work on those bases to conduct an annual spring cleanup to remove litter and other debris that collects during the winter. He said such activities build morale and inspire the troops as they take ownership and pride in their base.
Glenn Blackwood, executive director of the Marine Institute, praised the DND students and Lt. Cmdr. Hughes for establishing an inspiring and proactive approach to keeping MI’s campus clean. “We are thrilled Lt. Cmdr Hughes and our DND students have once again spearheaded this campaign. As the largest detachment in the province, the Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School has shown great leadership in representing the Canadian Navy in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Blackwood. “Last year’s event was a huge success. The litter collected ranged from car parts and tires to old refrigerators. The result was a very clean campus and I look forward to working with the DND students and detachment to ensure this year’s event is equally successful.”
