Carole Swan, president of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, dropped by the Marine Institute to get an up-close look at MI's facilities and latest advancements in applied research and technology in the food safety sector
The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University welcomed Carole Swan, president of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), to its Ridge Road campus in St. John's on Monday, April 11. Swan toured the Institute and received an up-close look at MI's facilities and latest advancements in applied research and technology in the food safety sector.
Joining Swan on the tour were Mike Hiscock, executive assistant to the president, CFIA, and a graduate of the Advanced Diploma Program in Food Safety at MI; Don Love, executive director, CFIA Atlantic Canada; and Karen Kennedy, regional director for CFIA's Newfoundland and Labrador office.
"We appreciate the time Ms. Swan took to visit the Marine Institute and we enjoyed showing her the research and educational facilities at MI," said Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute. "Ms. Swan's professional and academic backgrounds are very impressive, having worked at high levels in the public and private sectors all over Canada. It was a pleasure to discuss a number of pertinent topics with her during her visit to the Institute."
Swan started her visit with a tour of the Marine Institute's pilot processing plant, where she was accompanied by Heather Manuel, director of MI's Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD). From there, the CFIA president took in a presentation from MI's School of Fisheries. Carey Bonnell, head of MI's School of Fisheries, led the presentation, with input also coming from Ed Durnford, Chair of Food Programs, School of Fisheries; Craig Parsons, director of MI's Community Based Education Delivery (CBED) unit; Elaine Kennedy, chair, Post-graduate Certificate in Quality Management, MI, Dr. Jyoti Patel, SOF faculty member; and Blackwood.
"It was fitting to have the president of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency visit the Institute since more than 50 percent of CFIA's recent hires in Newfoundland and Labrador have been graduates of MI," said Bonnell. "We are proud of the fact Ms. Swan and CFIA think so highly of Marine Institute students and we appreciated the opportunity to show her some of the training facilities these students used during their time at MI."
As President of CFIA, Swan is responsible for carrying out the agency's directive to safeguard Canada's food supply, as well as the plants and animals upon which safe and high quality foods depend. She was named president of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in June of 2007.
