MI salutes students at Spring Presentation of Scholarships and Awards

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University hosted its annual Spring Presentation of Scholarships and Awards on Thursday, March 24

Thursday, March 24, 2011

The ceremony took place in Hampton Hall at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Rd. campus in St. John’s and included remarks from Glenn Blackwood, executive director, MI; and Dr. Evan Simpson, vice president (academic), Memorial University. Dr. Peter Fisher, head, academic and student affairs, Marine Institute, presented the scholarships.

"I want to congratulate all the winners of scholarships and bursaries. Their hard work and dedication earned them a spot at this ceremony," said Blackwood. “The students we honoured are on their way to bright careers and I believe these scholarships and bursaries are just the latest steps in their professional development.”

More than 20 scholarships were presented to close to 30 MI students during the ceremony, including four scholarships that were awarded for the first time. Included in this group are the Dr. Aidan Maloney Scholarship in Fisheries (Resource Management); the Cory Eddy Memorial Scholarship; the ESRI Canada GIS Scholarship; and the Rose Hatfield Healthy Living Bursary.

The Cory Eddy Memorial Scholarship is named after Corey Eddy, a graduate of MI’s Marine Engineering Systems Design program who passed away in the Cougar Flight 491 crash. His friends and family decided to offer a scholarship in his memory and raised funds through the operation of the Corey Eddy Memorial Golf Tournament.

The ESRI Canada GIS Scholarship is a national scholarship given by ESRI Canada recognizing MI for a strong, multidisciplinary focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in MI’s new Joint Diploma/Degree in Ocean Mapping.

The Rose Hatfield Healthy Living Bursary is to be awarded to a student who demonstrates a high level of academic ability and dedication to healthy living. The bursary is in honour of Rose Hatfield, a recreation specialist at MI who has been committed to healthy living for over 25 years via her position at the Marine Institute and her involvement in activities across Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Dr. Aidan Maloney Scholarship in Fisheries (Resource Management) was established through a generous gift by Dr. Aidan Maloney, who served the fishery of Newfoundland and Labrador in both the private and public sectors for almost fifty years. The scholarship will be given annually to a full-time graduate student enrolled in the Master of Marine Studies – Fisheries Resource Management program at the Marine Institute.

Funding for the scholarships and bursaries was provided by an assortment of organizations, companies, individuals and MI industry partners. The funding helps MI reward hard working students and plays a role in the Institute's ability to attract new students from across Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada.

"The Marine Institute is very appreciative of the support we receive from our donors; their help ensures we can offer scholarships to the young men and women who have worked so hard to earn their place at Thursday's ceremony," said Blackwood. "These scholarships and bursaries help MI salute some of the best students in the country and I want to thank all of the donors for making them available."
