MI Student Achievement celebrated at Spring Scholarship ceremony

Thirty one students were recognized today for their leadership, academic achievement and creativity at the Marine Institute's annual Spring Scholarship and Awards Presentation

The Institute continues to attract the best and the brightest as Newfoundland and Labrador's future prosperity is tied to the marine sector and the industries that depend upon it.

"Marine Institute graduates are the drivers behind the success of these industries, here at home, across Canada and around the world,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director of the Marine Institute. He referred specifically to the scholarship recipients who not only come from across Newfoundland and Labrador but from Nova Scotia and as far away as South Africa.

Blackwood also underlined the need to grow the Institute’s scholarship program to recruit and retain strong students for the future growth of the oceans technology sector in Newfoundland and Labrador. At the fall scholarship presentation, MI announced nine new scholarships.

In February, Jennifer Styles, a marine engineering student at MI, became one of the first ever recipients of the Oil and Gas Week scholarship, which aims to promote career opportunities related to the oil and gas industry. In January 2009, MI also announced new entrance scholarships for students enrolled in diploma and advanced diploma programs.

Starting September 2009, new diploma students with an 80% scholarship average or greater will receive a minimum of $1000. Students starting their advanced diploma in water quality, sustainable aquaculture, food safety or integrated coastal and ocean management will also receive $1000 with an undergraduate cumulative average of 75% or greater.

The first entrance scholarships will be awarded at the institute’s Autumn Presentation of Scholarships and Awards.
