The Marine Institute celebrated National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) by inviting junior high students to tour some of its facilities
MI presented Aquaculture: Farming the Waters on Oct. 19 at the Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD) at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus. Grade 8 students from Holy Trinity Regional High were on hand for an open house tour of CASD’s aquaculture facilities and took part in several aquaculture demonstrations. The Grade 8 students also had the opportunity to talk with MI instructors and researchers about how they are working to sustain fisheries in Atlantic Canada through training, industrial and applied research and education.
“It was a good opportunity for the students to see first-hand some of the activities that take place at the Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development,” said Heather Manuel, director, CASD. “It was encouraging to see so many young students with a strong interest in aquaculture and fisheries.”
National Science and Technology Week began on Oct. 16 and continues until Oct. 25. NSTW aims to provide an exciting environment for children and young adults in which they can interact with science and technology professionals and see what careers are available in this sector.
"In the spirit of National Science and Technology Week, the open house at CASD was designed to encourage children and young adults to engage in science and technology, interact with our professional faculty and staff and visit our world-class facilities,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute. “We hope that our open house and other events associated with National Science and Technology Week encourage young people to consider science and technology as career choices.”
Events taking place across Canada in support of NSTW include hands-on demonstrations, free tours of labs, open houses and school visits.
