MI Ocean Net is hosting a Friends of Beaches chapter event in Placentia on Saturday, Nov. 6. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cultural Arts Centre and includes an information session, beach cleanups and lunch barbeque
Members of the media are welcome to attend.
"MI Ocean Net’s Friends of Beaches Network gets youth and community volunteers involved in activities that protect and maintain our oceans and marine environments. The event in Placentia will serve not only as a marine cleanup, but also as an educational session for the many volunteers who want to learn more about the ways we can preserve our ocean and marine environments,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute. “We are pleased to partner with our Friends of Beaches chapter in Placentia and look forward to the great results sure to be achieved by volunteers in that region.”
Local elementary, junior high and high school students, divers, kayakers, Festival of Flags volunteers and members of the Placentia Bay Harbour Authority are among those invited to attend and take part in Saturday’s cleanup of both the Placentia beach and Jerseyside beach.
The day begins with an engaging and interactive slideshow and discussion regarding oceans health, hosted by Justin Dearing, conference coordinator, MI Ocean Net. The cleanups follow at 11 a.m., with the volunteers returning to the Cultural Arts Centre for a barbeque lunch at 1 p.m.
“All volunteers will receive an MI Ocean Net Friends of Beaches t-shirt made from 100 per cent organic materials and sustainably made in Canada,” said Dearing. “We also ask all volunteers to wear sturdy footwear, bring food and water and to wear appropriate clothing in case of changing weather conditions.”
The Friends of Beaches cleanup on Nov. 6 is one of three events spearheaded by MI Ocean Net this week.
On Wednesday, Nov. 3 Dearing will address students at Laval High School in Placentia at 9:40 a.m., discussing issues such as ocean sustainability, marine debris, plastic use and the power everyone has to make a difference in protecting Newfoundland and Labrador’s ocean environments.
On Friday, Nov. 5, Dearing will speak to more than 500 students at Holy Heart of Mary High School in St. John’s from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Among the topics on which he will speak are sustainability, oceans health and the success of youth and community volunteers who participate in MI Ocean Net’s Friends of Beaches Network and MI Ocean Net’s Youth and the Oceans Conference series.
