Megan LeMessurier, a second-year Marine Environmental student at the Marine Institute (MI), will provide a detailed account of her experiences with Students on Ice during an open lecture on Thursday, Oct. 14. LeMessurier will address Marine Institute students, faculty and staff, as well as member of the public. The event is free of charge and begins at 1 p.m. in MI's Hampton Hall
LeMessurier will address Marine Institute students, faculty and staff, as well as member of the public. The media is also invited to attend the event, which begins at 1 p.m. in MI’s Hampton Hall. LeMessurier took part in research and explorations during her trip to the Arctic in August as part of Students on Ice, a program designed to motivate, inspire and expand young people’s vision of the North and the planet.
Students on Ice provides youth from across the world with ship-based educational adventures to the Arctic and Antarctica with a mandate to educate and inspire a new generation of polar scientists, researchers and environmental leaders. During the expedition, LeMessurier had the opportunity to work alongside world-renowned scientists, historians, explorers and polar experts, while also enjoying group tours to the Arctic Circle, interpretive hikes and community visits.
She was exposed to a wide variety of wildlife, including whales, seals, polar bears, walrus and seabirds. LeMessurier’s Students on Ice voyage began on Aug. 4 when the Lyubov Orlova set sail from Kuujuaq, Quebec. She returned home on Aug. 21. Each day during the voyage student participants such as LeMessurier uploaded journals, photos and videos via satellite to the program’s website, www.studentsonice.com.
