After months of intense training, the mens and womens rowing teams from the Marine Institute have reason to celebrate after the rowing up the pond at the 192nd Royal St. John's Regatta yesterday
The Marine Institute/Canadian Forces mens team, made up of students from the Department of National Defence Navy programs, captured the gold medal in the CBC Male Commercial Race with a time of 10:45:60. The team included Shawn Miller, Gregory Smyth, Robert Sanford, Scott Steeves, Lane Richmond, Aaron Zwann, Shane Harvey and coxswain Paul Ring.
On the womens side, coxswain Jeannie Dalton led the Marine Institute/Canadian Forces team comprised of Kristy Dalton, Sherry Stamp, Dana Sideroff, Lynn-Ann Pearce, Alice Simms, Kristen Chipman and Jennifer Windsor to a third place finish in the City of St. John's Female Labour Race.
The Royal St. John's Regatta is the oldest continuing sporting event in North America. The event continues to draw in excess of 50,000 spectators each year and is a major focal point of summer activities in the St. John's area. Just as it has in the past number of years, the Marine Institute played a major role in the regatta.
In addition to supporting two teams, the Institute sponsored the Marine Institute Female Memorial race, won this year by Fortis. Rowers in yesterday's races also used the Marine Institute racing shell, unveiled at Quidi Vidi Lake in June 2008.
