The Marine Institute will host a community open house at its new Holyrood Marine Base on Friday, July 30 at 10 a.m., providing visitors with an opportunity to witness the activities and research undertaken at the facility. The event coincides with the MI Ocean Net Beach Clean Up, which begins at 11 a.m.
The general public is encouraged to attend, as are members of the media.
“The community open house is an excellent opportunity for people to see first-hand the research and other important activities undertaken on a daily basis at the Marine Institute’s recently constructed Holyrood Marine Base,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director, MI. “Visitors will also have a chance to enjoy our wet lab and Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) demonstrations.”
The community open house coincides with the MI Ocean Net Beach Clean Up, an event that challenges schools, families and outdoor lovers to show their adoration for local marine ecosystems by volunteering to remove garbage from beaches in Holyrood. The cleanup is part of MI Ocean Net’s Friends of Beaches network, a collection of volunteers from across the province committed to cleaning Newfoundland and Labrador’s beaches, shorelines and underwater areas.
“More than 500 youth and community members have volunteered their time and energy to this initiative and have helped return 31 marine areas to pristine condition,” Blackwood said. “Our objective is to inform the public about the importance of keeping our marine environment clean and the role we can all play in achieving this goal.”
The community open house begins at 10 a.m. Demonstrations and activities related to the capability and capacity of the Holyrood Marine Base take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with MI Ocean Net Beach Cleanup taking place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be face painting by the Wandering Brush and music by Terry Rielly at 12:30 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be available during this time. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. more ocean-and-marine-themed activities are planned, along with a series of demonstrations by personnel from MI’s Offshore Safety and Survival Centre between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
The recently constructed Holyrood Marine Base is a world-class facility capable of providing education to the Marine Institute’s industry clients. It also offers support for research related to ocean technology, fisheries, marine environmental studies, diving, oil spill response, offshore safety and survival, oceanography and marine biology. The facility serves as a base for research vessels, ROVs and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
