Operation Clean Sweep a success

The Marine Institute campus and surrounding neighborhoods got a little greener this week after approximately 100 bags of garbage, a refrigerator, two engine blocks and old car tires were collected from campus grounds

The first annual Operation Clean Sweep, organized by the Department of National Defence (DND) students, drew over 100 students, staff, and faculty, who demonstrated that small individual acts can add up to make a big difference.

"I am delighted that the Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School Detachment St. John's could contribute to this worthy cause," said Lt. Cmdr Stewart Hughes, coordinator of Operation Clean Sweep. "The enthusiasm demonstrated by all who participated says a great deal about the environmental stewardship of the Marine Institute faculty, staff and students. I hope everyone will continue to do their part every day of the year by disposing of litter, including cigarette butts, in the appropriate receptacles, taking the time to pick up litter they see on campus, and recycling."

Lt. Cmdr Hughes went on to say it is customary for Canadian Forces personnel who live and work on bases across Canada to conduct an annual spring cleanup to remove litter and other debris that collects during the winter. DND intends to make this an annual event with the continued support of the Marine Institute.
