DND students are inviting students, faculty and staff of the Marine Institute to join them for a campus clean-up day on Wednesday, May 14
The Department of National Defense (DND) students are inviting students, faculty and staff of the Marine Institute (MI) to join them for a campus clean-up day on Wednesday, May 14. DND will sponsor the event which begins at 1:00 p.m. outside MI's main entrance. The Marine Institute's Student Union (MISU) and the Marine Institute's Sustainability Committee (MISC) are also supporting the effort and are encouraging everyone to come out and participate.
"We will provide volunteers with bags and gloves and assign them an area to clean," said Lt. Cmdr Stewart Hughes, coordinator of Operation Clean Sweep. "We will have groups cleaning all of campus, as well as surrounding neighborhoods." Lt. Cmdr Hughes goes on to say that the clean up was initiated because on Canadian Forces Bases across Canada it is customary for the personnel who live and work on those bases to conduct an annual spring cleanup to remove litter and other debris that collects during the winter.
"Activities such as this also build morale and esprit de corps as they take ownership and pride in their base," he adds. " Since the Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School (CFNES) Detachment is proud to call MI its "base", it is fitting that the Detachment carries on this tradition. Also, since Newfoundland and Labrador is the most beautiful province in Canada, I believe we should all do our part to keep it that way."
DND intends to make this an annual event with the continued support of the Marine Institute. "The Marine Institute is excited to be a part of this campus clean-up effort and pleased that DND initiated this important event," said Glenn Blackwood, MI's executive director. "We all have a responsibility to keep our campus and neighborhoods clean and MI wants to be a leader in environmental stewardship and we hope to encourage others to create more sustainable communities through their daily choices and actions. We're hoping to create a healthier environment and build a stronger campus community."
A barbeque will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the MI cafeteria and all participants are invited to attend.
