Erica Fewer is working as a sonar survey technician with Kraken Robotics since completing her program. She is working towards getting her Professional Technologist certification through the Association of Engineering Technicians and Technology of Newfoundland and Labrador and Category B certification through the International Hydrographic Organization. She is also completing courses part-time to earn her Bachelor of Technology at MI.
“I chose the ocean mapping program because I have always loved being on the water. I loved going on boats, and this program offered the experience of collecting seabed data while also providing classroom instruction to process the data we collected. The opportunity to do offshore and office work and analyze the data we gathered made me want to join this program.
“My favourite memory in the program was collecting LiDAR and multibeam data on sunny days in Holyrood with Olga Telecka. I also loved the experience of travelling to Grenada with other MI students, which allowed us to collaborate with the students of T. A. Marryshow Community College.
“My advice for students interested in the ocean mapping program is to be a part of everything you can and enjoy the hands-on experience in Holyrood. Participating in everything possible will improve your time at MI.”
Jack Lindstrom is completing his internship with a post-secondary institution abroad through MI International and plans to pursue a Bachelor of Technology. He also hopes to continue his education in future with a master’s degree.
“I chose the Marine Environmental Technology program at Marine Institute because I valued small class sizes and gaining industry specific certifications. I also wanted to utilize my passion for the environment and conservation. I am so pleased to have been a part of this program and cannot wait to see what the future holds.
“Technical session in the spring is one of my favourite memories. Basic Oil Spill Response, Marine Emergency Duties - Domestic Vessel Safety, Marine Sampling, and Fish Identification were some of the courses I found the most fun. These courses are where my class really bonded and became a team.
“The main piece of advice I would give to other students would be to take advantage of opportunities that are thrown your way. Do the things that take you slightly out of your comfort zone, as this is where we grow the most. The three years of this program felt daunting at the beginning, but they flew by in an instant, so enjoy it while it lasts.
“I am looking forward to seeing where my experiences at MI will take me, and I thank all of my instructors for helping me get to where I am today.”
Isabelle Antunes dos Santos had always felt a connection to the sea.
“I enjoyed watching boats. Growing up in a place with many ships around sparked my curiosity and made me want to understand how they work, ultimately turning this into a profession.
“My favorite memory from the Naval Architecture program is seeing all my knowledge applied in my final project. Completing the model, the calculations, and the drawings was incredibly gratifying. It was a wonderful feeling to think, 'Wow, I made this.’
“This program is really exciting. My advice to students interested in Naval Architecture is to come prepared to work hard. You'll learn and accomplish a lot!
“My next steps are to find a job in this field and continue learning. I plan to earn additional credentials in the maritime industry and project management, improve my French and explore new paths for growth.”
