Four teams of students from Newfoundland and Labrador travelled to Kingsport, Tennessee to compete in the 2024 International MATE Competition from June 20-22
The competition is organized by the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center.
Memorial University’s Eastern Edge Robotics team placed 9th of 29 teams at the International MATE ROV Competition. The team also placed within the top ten in the engineering presentation category.
Twenty-nine teams from eight countries competed in the Explorer class. Teams were judged on their technical documentation, marketing display, product presentation and product demonstration.
The theme of this year’s competition was “Creating Solutions’ and challenged teams to pilot their ROVs through a series of tasks dedicated to addressing critical global issues. The competition is organized by the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center.
“It was fantastic to see such great representation from Newfoundland and Labrador at the World Championships,” said Joe Singleton, Head of the School of Ocean Technology.
“This program is globally inspiring the future engineers, scientists, and technologists to tackle the ocean environment.”
This year’s Eastern Edge team consisted of 24 post-secondary students from the Marine Institute and Memorial University.
In total, 45 students from Newfoundland and Labrador participated in the completion.
Three teams of high school students from Newfoundland and Labrador also attended the competition. These teams competed in the Ranger division against 37 other teams. Each team qualified after placing first, second and third at the Regional MATE Competition hosted at the Marine Institute in May.
Cougar Robotics from Clarenville High School placed 8th overall, Shark Tech from Labrador Straits Academy placed 19th and HHM ROV from Holy Heart of Mary finished 29th.
HHM ROV placed within third in the marketing display category and Cougar Robotics placed second for their engineering presentation.
Cougar Robotics were also the recipients of the Sharkpedo Award for the design of their multipurpose tool.
This year was Eastern Edge’s 20th year competing at the international level.
The 2024 team consisted of 24 members.
